Gingerbread Competition Details

Show us your incredible gingerbread creations and you could win an overnight stay at Mohonk!
Gingerbread steamships, Noah’s Ark, robots and dinosaurs, the Statue of Liberty, and, of course, the most intricate, detailed, and exquisite houses—all of these have been featured in the Hudson Valley Gingerbread Competition’s first five years. What will you make for the 2021 edition? We can’t wait to see!
PLEASE NOTE: Due to safety concerns of our guests and staff, this year we will not be hosting a public viewing as well as award ceremony on December 5.
HOW TO APPLY

- Submit your application online, or
- Fill out the entry forms below and email the completed forms to gingerbread@mohonk.com.
If you choose to enter as a group of 2 or more people, the Team Entry Form must be filled out in conjunction with an Adult or Junior Entry Form. Please submit entry forms to gingerbread@mohonk.com
IMPORTANT DATES
Deadline to submit entry form: Friday, November 5, 2021 at 5PM EST (or until available spaces are all filled). There is no fee to participate in the competition.
Entry Confirmation: By Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at 5PM EST.
Gingerbread Competition: Sunday, December 5, 2021.
Judge Selected Pieces Announced: Sunday, December 5, 2021 at 4:30PM.
Virtual and In-Person Voting: Thursday, December 9, 2021 – Friday, December 24, 2021.
Online Food Bank of the Hudson Valley Fundraiser: Sunday, December 5, 2021 – Friday, December 24 2021.
Gingerbread Pieces Displayed at Mohonk: Monday, December 6, 2021 – Saturday, January 1, 2022.
Winning Gingerbread Pieces Announced: Tuesday, December 28, 2021
COMPETITION PROCESS
Round 1
Our three judges will select eight pieces from the Adult Category and two from the Junior Category that will advance into the next round of competition. The pieces will be on display at the Mountain House and will also be featured virtually online. They will be judging on:
- Overall Appearance
- Originality & Creativity
- Difficulty
- Precision
- Consistency of Theme
Round 2/Final Round
There will be one Viewer’s Choice winner in the Adult Category and one Viewer’s Choice winner in the Junior Category who will be selected by voters online.
Online voting period: Thursday, December 9th – Friday, December 24th and winners will be announced on Tuesday, December 28th.
NEW THIS YEAR
There will also be 3 additional awards that the public can vote on for the Adult Category, which are:
- Best Use of Edible Mixed Media – Examples include a variety of techniques, but not limited to fondant, chocolate, spun sugar, pastillage, isomalt, marshmallow, piping, etc.
- Best Original Use of Gingerbread – Entries must showcase at least 25% of exposed gingerbread and should highlight use of gingerbread in unique or creative ways.
- Best Creative Use and Decoration of the Base – Entries have a 2’x2’ base or “cake board” to enhance their gingerbread display.
PRIZES
All competitors will receive a welcome gift at registration. Each competitor selected for the second/final round receives a gift certificate for two Winter Sports Passes.
Adult Viewer’s Choice Award
An overnight stay for two nights for two adults at Mohonk Mountain House.
Adult Best Use of Edible Mixed Media
An overnight stay for one night for two adults at Mohonk Mountain House.
Adult Best Original Use of Gingerbread
An overnight stay for one night for two adults at Mohonk Mountain House.
Adult Best Creative Use and Decoration of the Base
An overnight stay for one night for two adults at Mohonk Mountain House.
Junior Viewer’s Choice Award
A gift certificate for a 5-session Ice Skating Pass, each good for up to 4 people per session.
